Norwin Students Honor Veterans at V-J Day Commemoration

The Lamp Theatre in Irwin became a place of remembrance, honor, and community spirit on Sunday, September 21, as veterans, families, and local organizations gathered for GI Canteen for a Day to commemorate the 80th anniversary of V-J Day—the day marking the end of World War II. Among those who played an important role in the ceremony were students from the Norwin School District, whose involvement demonstrated the importance of educating future generations about service and sacrifice.

Under the direction of Mrs. Jennifer Herrington, the Hillcrest Intermediate School sixth-grade chorus opened the program by singing “The National Anthem” and “Eternal Father Strong to Save.” The chorus featured more than two dozen students, each lending their voice to honor veterans. Prior to the event, organizer and Navy veteran Tom Steiner met with the students to explain the significance of the war and how their music would inspire and comfort the audience.

Norwin High School’s Air Force JROTC cadets, led by Master Sgt. Holly Jadlocki, contributed in several meaningful ways. They presented the colors during the ceremony, assisted with setting up and tearing down, greeted veterans and guests as they arrived, and ensured the day ran smoothly. For sophomore Jackson McKee, who serves as the JROTC’s community service coordinator, participation was especially meaningful. “It really means a lot to us to help out our community, especially veterans,” Jackson said. “I always like learning about American history and all the stuff we have done to help make America the way it is.”

Alongside reenactments, historical displays, and a flyover by a veteran pilot, the involvement of Norwin students stood out as a reminder of the lasting connection between generations. The students demonstrated how the values of honor, respect, and remembrance are carried forward. Their participation not only paid tribute to those who served but also ensured that the lessons of history remain alive in the hearts of the community’s youngest members.
