North Hills resident Erin Blechman expands her reach with a powerful memoir on grief and loss.

Bradford Woods resident Erin Blechman somehow has managed to take a tragic personal experience and turn it into a mission to help others navigate the difficult topics of grief, mental illness and suicide. Her book, titled “My Unexpected Journey: Reflections After Losing My Son to Suicide,” is a deeply personal memoir that chronicles the 18 months following the death of her son Max in 2020.
“Max’s death has been the most devastating experience of my life,” says Blechman. “It is what put me on the path to become an author, speaker and certified grief educator.”
Written in the form of journal entries, the memoir is not just a story of loss, but a heartfelt exploration of grief, mental health struggles and the path to healing.
Accompanied by family photos and beautifully illustrated by Sarah Nelsen—who created six original watercolors inspired by a bird that Blechman saw repeatedly after Max’s passing—the book balances its heavy subject matter with moments of beauty and reflection.
Originally released in print in April of 2022, the book has already made a significant impact. Despite minimal marketing,
it has sold more than 500 copies and received more than 75 five-star reviews from readers, therapists, doctors and other professionals who praise its raw honesty and its ability to provide comfort and understanding to those facing similar losses.
In recognition of Suicide Prevention Month in September, Blechman relaunched the book in a Kindle version, available through Amazon. This new format aims to reach an even broader audience, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness and support.
“In a world where mental illness and suicide are often stigmatized and misunderstood, ‘My Unexpected Journey’ aims to shed light on these critical issues through a deeply personal narrative,” says Blechman. “By sharing my story, I hope to foster empathy, awareness and a sense of community among those affected by similar tragedies.”
While Erin Blechman is a proud member of the North Hills community, her reach extends far beyond, as her work resonates with individuals and families nationwide. As she continues to share her story and engage in grief work, Blechman’s mission remains clear: to provide solace, understanding and hope to those navigating the darkest moments of their lives.
