Churchill Borough Celebrates 90 Years!

Established in 1934, the origins of Churchill can be traced back to a time long before its official inception.

Celebrating 90 years strong, Churchill Borough stands as a testament to resilience, growth and community spirit. Established in 1934 by a group of forward-thinking residents seeking solace from rising tax burdens, this municipality has blossomed into a vibrant hub of activity, proudly preserving its rich heritage while embracing a vision of progress and inclusivity.

The origins of Churchill can be traced back to a time long before its official inception, to an era when French and British conflicts were taking over the hills of Western Pennsylvania. As early settlers carved out their livelihoods, the region bore witness to the ebb and flow of history, from the French and Indian War to the aftermath of independence.

By 1790, Churchill had evolved into a haven for pioneering families, prompting the establishment of Wilkins Township as a bastion of governance and growth. As industries flourished and communities burgeoned, the need for more localized governance became apparent, culminating in the birth of Churchill Borough in 1934. Led by visionaries like Joseph M. Hollander and F.F. Roher, the municipality sought to carve out its destiny as a place of peace and prosperity amidst the evolving landscape of Allegheny County.

Today, Churchill Borough spans 2.5 square miles of verdant terrain, embracing approximately 1,495 housing units and a diverse population of 3,157 residents.

Guided by a steadfast commitment to community welfare, the borough endeavors to foster a safe, attractive and active environment for all who call it home. From ensuring the integrity of infrastructure, to promoting community-based policing and recreation initiatives, Churchill Borough remains dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens while fostering sustainable development for future generations.

“The borough is guided by its mission, vision and values,” says Michelle McAndrew, borough manager.

In the constant pursuit of progress, Churchill Borough has embarked on a journey of innovation and sustainability. Over the past 90 years, it has embraced technological advancements to enhance communication with residents and neighboring communities, utilizing digital platforms and newsletters to foster engagement and transparency. Moreover, with a steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship, Churchill has pioneered initiatives such as the installation of electric vehicle charging stations and the exploration of solar energy solutions, underscoring its dedication to a greener, more sustainable future.

Looking ahead, plans for an all-inclusive playground are on the horizon, promising not only to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities but also to cultivate a more empathetic and cohesive community for all. As Churchill prepares to celebrate its centennial in 2034, the borough stands poised on the cusp of a new era, guided by the timeless values of unity, progress and service to humanity.
