Hyeholde Restaurant attracts visitors from afar looking for an exceptional culinary experience in a unique setting.

The enchanting Norman-like castle of Hyeholde Restaurant makes it easy to slip into another time when knights and their ladies gathered for magnificent banquets in the castle hall, sans the armor.
The building was the dream of founders Clara and William Kryskill, with a little practical help from noted architect J.P. Brennan. Their adventure in creating the idyllic escape began in 1931, with the couple finally opening the establishment in 1937. In addition to the unique castle, the surrounding landscape was planted with seedling trees and herbs that were used in the dishes they prepared for patrons.
As Clara and William grew older, they were forced to make the difficult decision to sell the restaurant. Entrepreneurs Pat and Carol Foy happily took over the restaurant from the aging couple. They were also successful with Hyeholde, and although they did make some changes, thankfully the unique property and its traditions were respected.
The Kryskills’ daughter, Barbara Kryskill McKenna, would eventually come to own Hyeholde again. Under her care, she continued the family tradition of serving beautiful fare in a lovely setting, while adding some new customs that have survived into the present.
She and her husband, Quentin, added new dining venues and began to offer picnics on the grounds, taking the innovative cuisine outdoors to enjoy. They also introduced the Chef’s Table experience, which was new at the time for the Pittsburgh area.
Chef Chris O’Brien, who purchased Hyeholde in 2023, is now the fourth owner of the establishment. He had previously worked at the restaurant for 16 years as the executive chef before leaving to open his own restaurant.
After 11 years, O’Brien has returned, bringing his wealth of experience and his love for the historic Hyeholde together in new dishes and innovation, while respecting the tradition of the original concept. His creations feature seasonal fruits and vegetables with plenty of game meat sourced from sustainable wild game farms, as he revitalizes classic dishes such as foie gras mousse and aromatic cassoulets.
The constantly evolving seasonal menu, which includes local produce, herbs and honey from the Hyeholde property, has been receiving sterling reviews.
“Over the years, I’ve learned and grown so much, both personally and professionally,” says O’Brien. “Hyeholde has always held a special place in my heart... I was married here!” Now, his children are working at Hyeholde and learning the art of fine cuisine.
For a special experience with the artistry of Hyeholde chefs, try the Chef’s Table, where they will curate a personalized menu with seasonal ingredients along with consideration for special dietary needs. And with the lovely late summer and early fall weather, it’s an excellent time for a picnic on the grounds.
There’s a reason why people come from all over the world to experience the unique restaurant that’s just around the corner for Moon residents. With Chef Chris O’Brien at the helm, Hyeholde will continue to be a local legend with worldwide acclaim.
