Growing Through Generations

With over 80 years of history, Kubrick Brothers Garden Center blends personalized service, evolving design trends and deep community ties to create something truly enduring.

Long before it became a treasured destination for gardeners and homeowners, Kubrick Brothers Garden Center began as something much simpler—a small, family-run produce stand in the 1940s in Brushton, Pennsylvania.

Founded by five brothers—including the late Clarence Kubrick, father of current owner John Kubrick—the business originally operated under the name Kubrick’s Farm Market, selling only fresh produce to the local community.

It wasn’t until nearly two decades later that the seeds of transformation were planted. By the 1960s, the family began expanding their offerings, introducing plant materials, garden supplies and eventually landscaping services. Growth was steady, with a new location opening in Monroeville along Route 22, across from the Miracle Mile Shopping Center.

In the 1970s, Kubrick’s presence extended even further with a kiosk inside the Monroeville Mall and a location on Mall Circle Drive—an early sign of the owners’ ability to adapt and entrepreneurial spirit.

As the next generation stepped in, the company continued to evolve. Eventually, Kubrick Brothers established a permanent home in Plum Borough along Route 909, where it still operates today. At one point, three Kubrick Brothers Garden Center locations were running simultaneously, until the brothers chose to part ways and manage separate ventures.

Today, the legacy is carried forward by John Kubrick, who has dedicated more than 50 years to the business and has overseen the Route 909 location for the past two decades.

Joining him are members of the third generation—his daughter Michelle Kubrick and son-in-law Ryan Burnette—both of whom have been integral to the business for over 20 years. Together, they continue to nurture not only the land but also the relationships that have sustained Kubrick’s for generations.

What sets Kubrick Brothers apart in a competitive industry is its deeply personal approach. With more than nine acres to explore, the garden center offers everything from unique houseplants and pottery to vegetables, annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. But it’s not just the selection—it’s the experience.

The team prides itself on connecting with every customer who walks through the door, offering guidance, sharing knowledge and ensuring that no one feels overwhelmed.

This commitment extends beyond retail into education and community engagement. Throughout the growing season, Kubrick’s hosts hands-on classes ranging from herb and succulent gardening in the summer to wreath making workshops during the holidays.

These interactive opportunities allow customers to deepen their skills while forming meaningful connections with the staff and each other.

The same philosophy drives the company’s landscaping services. Whether it’s a simple seasonal cleanup or a full-scale outdoor transformation, Kubrick Brothers approaches every project with care and attention to detail.

While patios and stonework remain popular, the current trend leans toward complete landscape overhauls—especially among new homeowners who are eager to create personalized outdoor spaces. Natural aesthetics, including stone elements, boulders and layered plant textures, have become a defining style in recent years.

As a family-run business, Kubrick’s has always placed a strong emphasis on community. Customers are treated like extended family, and the business actively supports local charities and fundraising efforts.

Looking ahead, the future is both exciting and challenging. With rising costs impacting small businesses nationwide, the Kubrick family remains focused on innovation while staying true to their roots. One of the newest initiatives includes expanding the cutting gardens, giving customers access to fresh-cut flowers and offering classes on how they can grow their own.

For Michelle Kubrick and the third generation, the goal is clear—to continue evolving while preserving the heart of what makes Kubrick Brothers special.

“We want to grow—not just as a business, but with our community,” she says. “We’re hopeful that the support we’ve been given over the years will continue, and that we’ll be here for many more to come.”

From a modest farm market to a thriving garden center rooted in family values, Kubrick Brothers is more than a business—it’s a living legacy, still growing strong.
