Forever in Bloom

For Alexandra Gerstel, beauty has always been about more than what meets the eye—it’s about meaning, memories and the stories we carry with us through the years. As the founder and artist behind Preciosa Jewelry Co., the Greensburg native has built a business rooted in transforming special moments into lasting keepsakes.

Gerstel launched her company in August of 2022, shortly after graduating from Saint Vincent College with a degree in International Business. While her academic background focused on customer success, software and marketing, her passion for creativity and entrepreneurship ultimately led her down a different path that blends artistry with deeply personal storytelling.

“I’ve always loved working with my hands,” she says. “But my journey really shifted when I began focusing on creating jewelry that wasn’t just beautiful, but meaningful.”

That philosophy is at the heart of Preciosa Jewelry Co., a name derived from the Spanish word for “precious.” Each piece is designed not only to beautify, but to preserve emotion, memory and significance.

The inspiration behind Gerstel’s work began with flowers—specifically, the realization that their beauty is often temporary. Weddings, milestones and celebrations are filled with stunning floral arrangements, but once the moment passes, those blooms typically fade away.

“I saw an opportunity to transform something fleeting into something lasting,” she says.

Today, Gerstel specializes in preserving flowers—particularly wedding bouquets—and turning them into heirloom-quality jewelry. Using materials like 14K gold-filled settings and .925 sterling silver, she creates pieces designed to stand the test of time, both physically and emotionally.

For many clients, the jewelry becomes more than an accessory. It’s a tangible connection to one of the most meaningful days of their lives.

“Weddings are incredibly symbolic,” says Gerstel. “Being able to take something so personal and turn it into something that can be worn daily or passed down is incredibly special and rewarding.”

Behind each finished piece is a meticulous, months-long process. Once flowers are received, Gerstel begins carefully drying them using specialized preservation methods to maintain their color and structure. Depending on the flower type and moisture content, this stage alone can take several months.

From there, each petal is individually prepared and arranged before being encapsulated in resin. The process involves multiple layers and curing stages to achieve a flawless, durable finish.

“It’s very detailed work,” she acknowledges. “But that time and care are what allow each piece to become a refined, heirloom-quality work of art.”

Gerstel’s work is deeply personal—not just for her clients, but for herself as well. Many of the flowers she uses are grown locally, including blooms from her parents’ garden in Greensburg.

“That adds another layer of meaning,” she says. “Knowing exactly where the materials come from and being involved from seed to final design allows me to be intentional with every detail.”

This connection to both nature and community is reflected in her growing presence throughout the Pittsburgh region. Through pop-ups, workshops, and festivals in areas like Fox Chapel, Upper St. Clair and Mt. Lebanon, Gerstel has introduced her work to a wider audience—and found a strong response.

“People are drawn in by how unique the pieces are,” she says. “But once they understand that these are real flowers being preserved forever, it creates a deeper emotional connection.

“Preserving wedding flowers is such a unique way to hold onto that day,” she continues. “It transforms something temporary into something permanent, and no two bouquets are ever the same.”

As Preciosa Jewelry Co. continues to grow, Gerstel has her sights set on expanding both her preservation services and her brand presence. In addition to increasing her reach throughout Pittsburgh, she plans to further develop her hands-on “Make Your Own Jewelry” workshops—an increasingly popular offering for bridal parties, private events and community gatherings.

Long term, she envisions the brand becoming a recognized name in heirloom jewelry, known for its craftsmanship, quality and storytelling.

“At the heart of everything I do is the belief that everyone deserves to feel precious,” says Gerstel. “Each piece is created with intention and care. It’s more than jewelry—it’s a way to carry your story with you.” For more information, visit thepreciosajewelry.com.
